When in Memphis: Corky’s BBQ

When in Memphis: Corky’s BBQ

I recently teamed up with Corky’s BBQ and Toyota to kick off my new blog series, When in Memphis, an online guide highlighting my favorite places to visit in my hometown of Memphis. I am really excited about this series because there are so many wonderful places Memphis has to offer. Some are pretty well-known, whereas some are hidden gems. And I am premiering this series with ‘When in Memphis: Corky’s BBQ’, my favorite place for BBQ.

Let’s recap my visit…starting with the drive!

When in Memphis Corky's BBQ

A close-up of my gorgeous statement sandals gifted to me from Pasha

I’ve driven several oversized SUVs for about 15 years and used to the ‘quality’ of the drive. So, having the new 2017 Toyota Corolla for the week was such an amazing experience and treat. Seriously, this car is amazing. For starters, I’d forgotten what a smooth ride and drive is. Ahhh! This car was an absolute treat with such awesome features. My favorite feature was the “Lane Departure With Steering Assistant” function. This feature helps keep drivers within lanes. This technology is designed to alert the driver when the system detects that the vehicle is about to deviate from a traffic lane. Not that I needed it… #eyeroll

And talk about being great on gas!!! I normally fill up about twice a week. But with this cute little number, I only used a quarter of a tank with my one-week loan. Because of this, I am seriously considering adding a Toyota CAR to my garage for those days when I just don’t feel like taking the SUV. And for y’all who are wondering, I normally drive a Toyota 4-Runner. Toyota all the way, Baby! When in Memphis Corky's BBQ

Oh yeah, I had G. Boo in tow!!!

After driving around for a bit, we headed on to Corky’s BBQ locate in the heart of Memphis (East Memphis) on the very well-traveled Poplar Avenue. You haven’t experienced true Memphis BBQ until you’ve had Corky’s BBQ. Corky’s has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the top BBQ restaurants in Memphis.

Note: Traditional Memphis barbecue sauce is best known for its simplicity, and does not overwhelm the wonderful smoked flavor of the traditional barbecued pork. Although sweet compared to other regional sauces, it’s not too sweet, too thick, too spicy, or too anything. Just doggone good!

We started our visit with Ms Louise’s sweet tea. Now, you haven’t had sweet tea until you’ve had Ms. Louise’s sweet tea!!! Whenever I’m in Memphis, I have it Every. Single. Day. (They sell it by the gallon too!) This tea is so sweet that there’s a possiblitly you could go into a diabetic coma! True Southern Sweet Tea! This tea is so good and addictive that she had to teach the Corky’s staff how to make it because she doesn’t work on weekends. So I’ll say it again: It is sooo good!!! #icantbelieveiwroteaparagraphaboutsweetteaWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky's

We ended up ordering wet and dry ribs (I like them wet/G. Boo likes them dry), a BBQ sandwich (Memphians know a ‘BBQ sandwich’ is a pulled pork sandwich…nothing more, nothing less), half a chicken, and BBQ spaghetti. All meals are served with baked beans, slaw, and delish warm rolls!!!When in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky'sIf the meat isn’t tender and the sauce isn’t sweet, then you don’t deserve to sell BBQ! I’ve never had a bad experience with Corky’s. They got their meat and flavor just right. The ribs and chicken pretty much jumps off the bones and into your mouth for you. Yep, just that tender. Although I didn’t order it, the BBQ shrimp is another one of my favorites. It’s BBQ shrimp over a bed of spaghetti. It’s something about the seasoning of the sauce that really stokes my palate.

FYI…They also sell HUGE fried catfish, BBQ Nachos, Chicken Tenders, an array of salads, Smoked Sausage & Cheese Platter, and practically anything else you just may crave. (Click here for their extensive menu.) And yes, the portions are generous. When in Memphis Corky'sWhen in Memphis Corky's

After all of that, we ordered dessert: Homemade Banana Pudding and Chocolate Fudge Pie. Let me tell you a little somethng about me: If it isn’t my mom’s banana pudding, then I don’t eat it. Corky’s is the exception! They are also known for their signature Fudge Pie. Another thing about me: I don’t like chocolate desserts. But I LOVE this (warmed) topped with ice cream. Another one of my favorite Corky’s dessert is their Pecan Pie! All of their delicious desserts are made from scratch daily and with love! #insertheartemojiWhen in Memphis Corky'sNot only is the food and Southern Sweet tea amazing, so is the staff! You are greeted and treated with true and home-grown Southern hospitality that can only be experienced in Memphis. You’ll love and return over and over again because of it (and the food too, of course)!

Tip: They say to come early to avoid the crowds. Forget about it, it doesn’t work!  Corky’s is ALWAYS crowded and rightly so. When you want good Memphis BBQ, Corky’s is where it’s at! (My mom will read this and tell me to not use ‘at’ at the end of a sentence.)

Corky’s: Serving the world’s finest hickory-smoked ribs and BBQ is more than a commitment; it’s an ongoing legacy of greatness.

Special thanks to Toyota and Corky’s BBQ (thanks Redrick for setting this up) for helping me kick off the ‘When in Memphis’ series. When planning a trip to Memphis, make sure Corky’s is on the top of your BBQ list!

Be on the lookout for the next ‘When in Memphis’ blog post later this year!
