If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I spent my Easter weekend in the cute, quaint town of Helen, GA. Helen is a re-creation of a Bavarian Alpine Village with over 200 specialty and import shops and boutiques. You can find everything from locally-made candies, candle making, glass blowing to fashion, quilts and cuckoo clocks. Normally when you run into a town of around 500, you blink and you’re in the next town. But not Helen! No, this town is a cool tourist attraction. For one, the Chatahoochee River gently flows through this picturesque town. Although I didn’t get to experience all Helen has to offer, such as tubing the Hooch, horseback riding, or wine tasting at the Habersham Winery, I did explore the town center…which is where it was happening and walking distance.
I do plan on visiting this charming town around the Holidays. The town is lit all year round. So I can only imagine what it’s like during the Holidays.
Some of my cuisine recommendations are at the end of this post for anyone looking to visit this beautiful and friendly area!
Where we ate:
Cowboys & Angels – The food and service were both so amazing that we ate here twice during our two day stay. The first night I had the seafood pasta which was amazing! The rest of the family had ahi tuna. I tasted it for the first and couldn’t believe I never tried it before. G. Boo had the blackened ahi tuna and other family members had peppercorn ahi. Although both were totally delish, the blackened tuna grabbed my heart (and taste buds) so much so that when we returned the next day for lunch, I ordered both the blackened tuna AND the seafood pasta! And the Front Door Lemonade is a drink you shouldn’t pass up!
Troll Tavern – Troll Tavern was truly unique in its location: It is under the bridge on the river in downtown Helen. (Where else would you find a troll?!?) I loved that no matter where you’re seated, you see people tubing or taking photos in the river. We ate here after we checked into our hotel. Troll Tavern specializes in German fare and wraps. It was no surprise to my family I ordered the Thia Chicken Wrap as I’m a huge wrap fan. G. Boo ordered the burger which was HUGE and delish…according to him!
The Meeting Place – We ate Easter breakfast here and let me tell you, these are the most friendlies people ever! They greeted us with a cheerful Easter greeting and a smile, the server was very attentive making sure we were completely satisfied, and they gave us pointers with the city. The food was Southern Fare and pretty good. I will definitely come back here when I return to Helen.
Last but not least, the candy shop. I didn’t write the name down but there’s only one in the downtown area. I purchased several pieces of ‘ turtles’ which they call ‘snappers’ and they were just heavenly. It was very obvious in the taste they were made on site. They were super rich and just had that homemade taste to them.
